That's a good question.

Read this only if you're interested in the politics of newsletter management.   Otherwise, please just keep an eye out for the confirmation message and follow the instructions - otherwise, you just won't get my emails.

Short Answer:

It's the only method we have to deal with the spam problem.

Long Answer:

There's a little problem on the Internet called the "Joe Job."  This is where someone subscribes you to someone's mailing list without your consent (usually with some malicious intentions).

After someone has been "joe-jobbed" they usually think the list owner is spamming them.  So, they scream bloody murder and the newsletter owner gets shut down.

If you have a "confirmed opt-in" system in place, a Joe Job is impossible.   Anyone who subscribes must confirm via an email sent to the subscribing email address.

In my opinion we shouldn't be punishing the newsletter owner - we should be punishing the guy responsible for the Joe Job.  However, that's just not the way it works these days, so we newsletter owners have a little extra work to do, and you subscribers have an extra step.
